Holiday and Weekend Premium Rules
How to build a time of day window rule that pays holiday pay on fixed dates, the Nth or last weekday of a month, and chosen weekdays, with the exact dates behind the US federal holidays preset.
A Time of day window rule moves scheduled time into a state, such as Holiday pay, when it falls inside a window on the days the rule selects. A rule can select days by weekday, by calendar date, or both. This page covers the day and date settings. For the rest of rule sets, see Rule Sets.
Choose When the Rule Applies
A Time of day window rule has three settings that decide when it is live.
Window. Turn on All day to cover the whole day, or set a Window start and Window end. A window that runs past midnight, such as 22:00 to 06:00, counts the hours after midnight as the next day.
Days. Pick weekdays, for example Saturday and Sunday.
Holidays and dates. Add dates that repeat every year. There are two kinds:
- Date: a fixed day, such as July 4.
- Weekday of month: the Nth weekday of a month, such as the 4th Thursday of November. The choices are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and Last. There is no 5th, because many months have only four of a given weekday and a 5th would skip most years. Use Last instead.
A day matches when its weekday is selected or it matches a date. One rule can say "Sundays and holidays".
| Days | Dates | The rule applies on |
|---|---|---|
| None | None | Every day |
| Selected | None | Those weekdays |
| None | Selected | Only those dates |
| Selected | Selected | Those weekdays plus those dates |
Example: Holiday Pay at 1.5x
Holiday pay is a state, so start with the state and the rate.

Price the state
Add the rule
In a rule set, choose Add rule. Name it "Holiday pay", set the condition type to Time of day window, turn on All day, and set the resulting state to Holiday pay.
Add the holidays
A shift that starts at 20:00 on the night before a holiday and runs to 04:00 is paid at the Normal rate until midnight and at Holiday pay from midnight, because each side of midnight belongs to its own day.
What the Federal Holidays Preset Adds
Add US federal holidays adds these eleven entries to the list. It adds to what you already have and never removes your own dates, so you can add the preset and then edit or remove any entry.
| Holiday | How the rule matches it |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Date: Jan 1 |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Weekday of month: 3rd Monday of January |
| Presidents' Day | Weekday of month: 3rd Monday of February |
| Memorial Day | Weekday of month: Last Monday of May |
| Juneteenth | Date: Jun 19 |
| Independence Day | Date: Jul 4 |
| Labor Day | Weekday of month: 1st Monday of September |
| Columbus Day | Weekday of month: 2nd Monday of October |
| Veterans Day | Date: Nov 11 |
| Thanksgiving | Weekday of month: 4th Thursday of November |
| Christmas Day | Date: Dec 25 |
The entries show in the list by their calendar form, for example "3rd Mon of Jan", not by holiday name. If your agreement defines holidays differently, remove an entry and add your own.
Limits to Know
The rule matches the actual date, never the observed day. When July 4 falls on a Saturday, the rule applies on Saturday, not on the Friday that is observed as the day off. If your agreement pays the observed day, add that day as its own date.
- Days that follow another holiday cannot be expressed. The day after Thanksgiving is not a fixed weekday of November, and Easter-based days follow no month rule. A fixed date would be right only in some years, so these cannot be set up as a date.
- Feb 29 only matches in leap years.
- Time of day window rules only. Block duration and Time since clearance rules refuse dates.
- The date comes from the schedule block's own time. There is no separate time zone setting for rules.
